「写真は「表現」や「創造」の敵です。だって機械が撮ったのですよ。そこに「表現」や「創造」の要素が入り込む余地はありません。「創造」という言葉もいやですね。わたし達は創造主という神じゃない。どちらかといえば神はカメラで、写真家はその下僕です。そして写真はまた想像力の敵でもあります。写ったものしか見ることができないのですから、そこに想像の力を発揮する余地もありません。よく写真を見ていろんなことを想像して語る人がいますが、もっと画面をよく見ろと言いたいですね。お前のつまらない想像なんてどうでもいい。重要なのは画面に写っているものだと声を大にして言いたいです。ただそうなると写真を語る言葉というのは、犬が写っているとか、ビルが写っているとかそんな退屈なトートロジーでしかなくなるのですが、そういう退屈さもまた写真の面白いところです。」
